Hampshire contains the Hampshire Downs to the east and the New Forest to the west. Between these lies the River Test Valley with Southampton and Eastleigh at its estuary and Winchester further inland. Most of the population lives in a few large towns and cities and the rest of the county is open downland or agricultural with small villages and hamlets. The A31 crosses the New Forest between Southampton and Ringwood, the A32 crosses the Hampshire Downs between Portsmouth and Alton and the A272 between Petersfield and Winchester. The A3 from London goes through Petersfield to Portsmouth. The county roads center upon Andover, Winchester and Basingstoke and they have grown as a result.
